Ticknor Leaving Athletics Communications for Different Role at Washington College

CHESTERTOWN, Md. — Phil Ticknor, who has headed up the Athletics Communications efforts at Washington College for over 18 years, will step down as Assistant to the Athletic Director for Communications and Compliance next month in order to take on the role of Coordinator of Pre-Health Professions Programs at the institution. His final day in the athletic department will be Wednesday, November 6th 2019. He will start his new position the following day.

“The Athletic Department at Washington College has always been comprised of an incredible group of people and now is no exception,” Ticknor states. “I trust I am leaving our communications efforts in fantastic shape as I take on a new professional challenge. I am excited to become a part of the Academic Affairs staff and work closely with our faculty and Pre-Health Professions students. After promoting our athletic department for 18 years, I am eager to be involved with a different facet of our institution that also enhances the value of a Washington College education.”

Serving initially as Sports Information Director, Ticknor’s title changed to Assistant to the Athletic Director for Communications and Academic Support in 2011 and then to his most recent title in 2017.

Upon his hire, Ticknor completed a total redesign of the Washington College Athletics web site. During the summer of 2006, he again redesigned the site and moved it to WashingtonCollegeSports.com. In the spring of 2010, Ticknor worked with PrestoSports as WashingtonCollegeSports.com moved to its current home.

Thanks to Ticknor’s efforts, Washington College was the first institution in the Centennial Conference to offer live Internet statistics and play-by-play text for any sport. Ticknor later helped launch a broad-based live video-streaming program for athletic department in the Fall of 2011. In February 2012, through a partnership with Stretch Internet, that program evolved into Goose Nation TV. Goose Nation TV brings live video coverage of home games for 12 of the college’s varsity sports.

Ticknor played a large role in the creation of the Charles B. Clark Cup, awarded annually to the winner of the Washington College/Salisbury University regular season men’s lacrosse game. He assisted the NCAA with the production of the first-ever NCAA Statisticians’ Manual for women’s lacrosse, published in 2009. He was also instrumental in the formation of the Mid-Atlantic Rowing Conference and has served as the conference’s web editor since its formation in 2009.

Ticknor served two terms on the College’s Staff Council, including one year as chair. He was honored by the College with the President’s Distinguished Service Award in 2016.

“Words aren’t enough to describe the impact Phil has had on our athletic department,” notes Director of Athletics Thad Moore. “I truly believe we have one of the best athletic communications departments in the country and Phil deserves all the credit. He has assembled and managed a wonderful staff who continuously strive to better the services they provide to our athletic family. From 2001, when he started, to now you can’t possibly list all of the improvements and accomplishments he’s overseen. From archives to live streaming Phil’s vision led the way. What few would know is how much Phil was involved in the day-to-day operations of the athletic department. Whether it be representing our department on Staff Council or serving on the dozens of search committees over the years, you could always count on Phil’s willingness to help out. While we are sad to see Phil go we couldn’t be happier that his new position, within the college, will give him more time to spend with his family. Phil, on behalf of the entire athletic department thank you for all that you have done. It’s not often one can say they have left a lasting legacy but you can do just that.”
