Caroline County BOE Approves Plans for 2020 Graduation

Denton, MD – At the May Board of Education meeting, Superintendent Patty Saelens outlined plans to recognize seniors from both Colonel Richardson and North Caroline High Schools.

Dr. Saelens shared that both principals had convened committees made up of staff, students, and parents to gather feedback and consider all options. This proposal was put forth by both schools for the Board’s approval. She also stressed that all plans are contingent upon the COVID-19 situation, which continues to be fluid, and the advice of local health department officials.

Plan as presented:

  • In an effort to provide a ceremony-like experience, each senior will be given a scheduled time to walk across the CRHS or NCHS stage in cap and gown. To safely manage this for all seniors, appointments will be scheduled over the course of several days. Four family members may attend, and while pomp and circumstance is playing, the graduate’s name will be read and a professional photograph taken. Seniors will be receiving an email from their school with specific details and appointment times.
  • Both schools are having professional graduation videos created that will include recorded speeches and a slide for each graduate that includes name, senior photo, specific honors, and future plans. To the extent possible, videos will also include special events that normally occur at each school’s graduation.

“Everyone understands that because of COVID-19 restrictions, large gatherings such as graduation ceremonies are not permitted,” Dr. Saelens stated. “However, it was important to everyone involved that the culmination of senior year be honored and celebrated. We want to do as much as possible, as safely as possible, for the Class of 2020.”
