University of Maryland Medical System Announces Acquisition Of Nine ChoiceOne Urgent Care Sites

Locations in Baltimore, Caroline, Harford and Talbot counties & Baltimore City Formerly Operated Under Joint Venture Agreements

The University of Maryland Medical System (UMMS) has purchased full interests in nine ChoiceOne Urgent Care sites in Baltimore, Caroline, Harford and Talbot counties and Baltimore City. The transaction is effective March 1, 2020.

Three UMMS affiliates – University of Maryland St. Joseph Medical Center (UM SJMC), University of Maryland Shore Regional Health (UM SRH), and University of Maryland Upper Chesapeake Health (UM UCH), had operated the sites under joint ventures with Choice One, a subsidiary of Fresenius Medical Care since 2015.

“Providing access to high-quality, convenient and affordable urgent care services is critical for individuals and families who live and work in these communities,” said Mohan Suntha, MD, President and Chief Executive Officer of UMMS.

“Bringing ChoiceOne Urgent Care centers fully into our medical system allows UMMS to provide patients with integrated clinical services and a continuous care experience. This purposeful and strategic decision to invest in urgent care centers is part of our drive to transform health care delivery in our state and connect patients with the care they deserve – where and when they need it. This acquisition will allow us to leverage the size and scale of our System, connect patients across the communities we serve with academic, discovery-based medicine and allow for a deeper integration of clinical services.”

The urgent care locations include:
Baltimore County
ChoiceOne Urgent Care – Dundalk (1730 Merritt Boulevard)
ChoiceOne Urgent Care – Phoenix (14237 Jarrettsville Pike)
Baltimore City
ChoiceOne Urgent Care – Belvedere Square (600 E Belvedere Avenue)
ChoiceOne Urgent Care – Rotunda (711 West 40 Street)

Caroline County
ChoiceOne Urgent Care – Denton (8 Denton Plaza)

Harford County
ChoiceOne Urgent Care – Aberdeen (744 S. Philadelphia Blvd)
ChoiceOne Urgent Care – Fallston (2315 Belair Road)
ChoiceOne Urgent Care – Forest Hill (1528 Rock Spring Road)

Talbot County
ChoiceOne Urgent Care – Easton (28522-C Marlboro Avenue)

ChoiceOne staff members will join the 28,000+ UMMS employees later this year, employed under a new entity called UMMS Ambulatory Care, LLC. Non-providers will become employees on May 1 and approximately 40 clinical providers (physicians, nurse practitioners and physician assistants) will join the System as employees effective July 1, 2020

The urgent care sites will provide opportunities to reduce the total cost of care for patients via a deeper engagement with wellness programs promoting population health initiatives and working with patients to manage issues around social determinants of health. With full ownership of the urgent care sites, UMMS will be positioned to provide enhanced services at a lower cost, evaluate future expansion of clinical services and consider expansion to new sites.
