David Gansell Named Director of Athletic Communications and Academic Affairs at Washington College
CHESTERTOWN, Md. – David Gansell, a veteran of nearly 25 years in the collegiate athletic communications field has been named the Director of Athletic Communications and Academic Affairs at Washington College. Gansell comes to Maryland’s Eastern Shore following a one-year stint at Radford University in Virginia.
“We are excited to welcome David to our athletic family,” states Washington College Director of Athletics Thad Moore. “He brings a wealth of athletic communications experience to the department that will benefit the entire Washington College community.”
Gansell is looking forward to the opportunity here at Washington College.

I am eager to deliver a strategic communications plan that the entire department and campus community can be proud of.”
Gansell spent the 2018-19 school year at Radford where he was the Assistant Athletics Director for Communications as he oversaw the Division I program’s 16 sports and served as primary contact for women’s basketball, women’s volleyball, men’s and women’s golf and baseball. He oversaw the content for the Highlanders’ website, handled social media, maintained statistics and produced department publications.
Prior to his time at Radford, Gansell spent 11 years as the Director of Athletic Communications from August 2007-August 2018 at St. Francis Brooklyn College in the New York City borough of Brooklyn. He was responsible for promoting and overseeing all aspects of the department’s 19 sports that competed on the Division I level. Gansell established the Terrier Sports Network as part of NEC (Northeast Conference) Front Row that allowed fans to watch games online and also included video features, highlights and interviews on NEC Front Row. Gansell also created the “Terrier Nation Club” which is a student-run group that assists in live streaming of St. Francis home events. He was a part of the College’s committee that helped introduce a new brand for Terrier Athletics in 2013. He was the primary contact for men’s basketball, men’s soccer, men’s and women’s water polo, men’s and women’s golf and women’s volleyball during his tenure in Brooklyn. He helped Terrier student-athletes and administrators get featured in media outlets in New York City and nationally.
From September 2003-August 2007, he was the Assistant Commissioner/Director of Media Relations for The City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC). He aided the Executive Director of the CUNYAC in running the daily operations of the Division III conference consisting of New York City colleges. Gansell carried out the daily public relations efforts of the conference, reports to the NCAA and managing the CUNYAC website. He coordinated all-conference balloting and ran the players of the week award for the sports the CUNYAC sponsors. He facilitated a partnership with Time Warner Cable to air the CUNYAC/Con Edison Basketball Tournament live to all five boroughs in New York City.
From February 1996-August 2003, Gansell served in two roles at his alma mater, University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC). From February 1996 through July 2002 he was the Assistant Sports Information Director and then became Associate Director of Athletic Communications in July 2002. He aided in the media relations and game day operations of the University’s 20-sport Division I program. Gansell served as a broadcaster for Retriever contests over the internet and served as a department liaison to print and electronic media locally, regionally and nationally.
Gansell’s first position in collegiate athletic communications was at the University of Delaware where he served as a Sports Information Intern from August 1995-January 1996. He helped coordinate game day statistics for the Blue Hens’ football and men’s basketball teams and contributed to the game notes for the press.
In addition to his athletic communication positions, he served as a feature writer for the White Plains Reporter-Dispatch in White Plains, New York in January 1994 writing feature stories on area high school student-athletes and as a Gameday Guest Services Ambassador for the Baltimore Ravens during the 2000 and 2001 seasons where he assisted in game day functions for the Ravens during home games at M&T Bank Stadium.
Gansell is a 1995 graduate of UMBC where he majored in Interdisciplinary Studies with a concentration in Sports Management. He had an extended minor in Writing.
Gansell will start his role at Washington College on January 6, 2020.
