Denton Man Charged in Malicious Burning
CAROLINE COUNTY, MD – Deputy State Fire Marshals arrested two suspects today in connection with an intentionally set fire to personal property in Denton.
James Hughes III, 18, and a 17-year-old male juvenile, both of Denton, Maryland were charged with 2nd Degree Malicious Burning, Four Counts of Reckless Endangerment, and Malicious Destruction of Property under $1,000 for intentionally setting fire to Mr. Leonard Lau’s clothing within close proximity to an occupied dwelling.
At 5:59 a.m. on Wednesday, July 10, 2019, Denton Volunteer Fire Company was dispatched to 10240 River Landing Road for a reported odor of gas. Firefighters discovered the fire damaged remnants of clothing located in the yard of the home and requested the Office of the State Fire Marshal. Deputy State Fire Marshals conducted an investigation and determined the suspects were responsible for intentionally setting fire to the clothing.
James Hughes III and the juvenile face a maximum of over twenty-one (21) years and/or $21,000.00 in fines if found guilty of all the charges. Hughes III was released on a $5,000.00 unsecured bond. The juvenile was referred to the Department of Juvenile Services and released to the custody of his guardian.
