Information on Fatal Crash in Elkton on Friday May 10, 2019
Elkton, MD – On Friday May 10, 2019 at just after 1:00 PM troopers from North East Barack responded to eastbound Pulaski Highway, prior to Old Elk Neck Road for a three vehicle crash.
The preliminary investigation revealed the operator of a silver 2007 Toyota Camry, Madeline Clifton 26 y.o. of North East Maryland, suffered an apparent medical emergency while approaching the construction zone on Pulaski Highway. The Camry entered into the right lane closure and then eventually swerved back into the left lane, where it struck the rear of a black 2011 Nissan Sentra which was driven by Kristin Griffen, 35 y.o. of North East Maryland. The Sentra was propelled into the closed right lane where it struck a parked 2017 Peterbilt dump truck.
Madeline Clifton declined medical assistance from Cecil County Emergency Services at the scene. The driver of the truck, Eric Mackie, 35 y.o. of Elkton MD, was also apparently uninjured from the crash. However, the operator of the Sentra, Kristin Griffen was flown to the University of Maryland, Shock Trauma in Baltimore by an MSP Aviation medevac helicopter. Ultimately, Kristin Griffen succumbed to her injuries while at Shock Trauma on Sunday, May 12th.
The roadway was closed for approximately two (2) hours on Friday during the investigation with the assistance of the State Highway Administration and the Cecil County Fire Police. The Maryland State Police CRASH team will be investigating this collision. Anyone who may have witnessed this collision is asked to contact the Maryland State Police North East Barrack at 410-996-7800, in reference to case #19MSP019556. Once completed, the investigation will presented to the Cecil County State’s Attorney’s Office to review for the possibility of charges.
