Christian Cabral named Shipyard Manager
Cabral first joined CBMM at the end of 2018 as its Floating Fleet Captain. A graduate of the University of San Francisco, he holds a bachelor’s degree in U.S. history, with a minor in philosophy. A majority of his professional career has been spent on the water, starting with an apprenticeship with boatbuilder, Gannon & Benjamin Marine Railway. He later followed his father and brother and began working on sail training/charter vessels operated by Black Dog on Martha’s Vineyard. Since then, Cabral has worked onboard a variety of vessels both commercial and private, managed a charter business and, for the past five years, served as mate and captain onboard an 82’ schooner built by Gannon & Benjamin.
“Christian’s experience with the craftsmanship of boats, professional shipyards, and client relationships makes him an exceptional next leader for our Shipyard,” said CBMM President Kristen Greenaway. “We have great faith in him to lead our staff through the exciting new projects we have in the works and to take the utmost care of the historic vessels already in our floating fleet.”
Cabral will be replacing Michael Gorman, who has been with CBMM full-time since 2011, having completed his shipwright apprenticeship at CBMM from 2006–2007. This spring, he will be leaving the Eastern Shore for a position with the San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park.
This summer will be an active time for CBMM’s Shipyard, with the start of construction on a new Maryland Dove scheduled to begin on June 1 at its Maritime Day celebration, and a restoration of the 1912 river tug Delaware already underway.
