Maryland State Police Investigating Fatal Two-Vehicle Crash In Caroline County

(PRESTON, Md.) – Maryland State Police are investigating a multi-vehicle crash that killed one person and injured another on Tuesday in Caroline County.

Shortly before 12:45 p.m. on Tuesday, troopers from the Easton Barrack responded on a report of a two-vehicle crash that occurred in the area of the 6000 block of Harmony Road near Wilkins Branch Road in Preston, Maryland.

According to a preliminary investigation, the driver of a red Buick Encore, identified as Linda Lee Sweitzer, 76, of Preston, Md., crossed the center line and struck a white Peterbilt dump truck. Sweitzer was declared deceased at the scene. The driver of the dump truck, identified as Gary Wayne Whitten, 52, of Secretary, Md., was transported to Easton Hospital for treatment of his injuries.

There was extensive clean up required at the scene due to the crash. As a result, the road was closed until about 10:20 p.m. on Tuesday. The Maryland State Police Crash Team and the Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division also assisted in the investigation.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
