Compass Regional Hospice to host Survivor Day

CENTREVILLE — Compass Regional Hospice will host Survivor Day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, November 17, 2018 at the Hope and Healing Center, 255 Comet Drive, Centreville.

International Survivors of Suicide Loss Day is the one day a year when people affected by suicide loss gather in their local communities to find comfort and gain understanding as they share stories of healing and hope. Survivor Day is sponsored by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP.)

This year’s gathering will include a screening of an AFSP-produced documentary, which will be followed by presentations lead by Compass Regional Hospice grief counselors, small group discussions and a candlelight remembrance ceremony. A light lunch will be provided.

Compass Regional Hospice invites anyone in the community affected by suicide loss to join in the day. For many loss survivors, attending a Survivor Day event is an opportunity to discover that they are not alone in their experience of losing someone they know and love to suicide.

Typically, the event is an intimate gathering of those who are sharing in a similar loss. Our grief counselors welcome guests to bring photos and items of remembrance to share during the remembrance ceremony.

The Hope and Healing Center is a collection of programs and services available for the families of patients who have died under hospice care, as well as members of the community who are grieving the death of a loved one.

Services available in Queen Anne’s, Kent and Caroline counties include individual and family grief counseling, grief support groups, school‐based grief counseling, a grief retreat summer camp called Camp New Dawn, and remembrance events and specialized workshops. Since grief support programs are offered free of charge, Compass Regional Hospice depends on donations to cover the cost of operating its grief support services.
